How to Play Blackjack Like a Pro in a Week

Blackjack is probably the most popular of all the gaming tables on offer in today’s casinos and this popularity has been immortalized in many films based around the game. The appeal for most players is the combination of simplicity in the concept but a required amount of skill and knowledge in the execution (ibcbet account access is here). In addition a Blackjack table with the standard casino odds, not one that has been adjusted in favor of the house can yield one of the highest payout percentages of any of the gambling options available in a casino.

Basics of Blackjack

The basic concept of Blackjack is to use two or more cards to get your total score as close as possible or exactly at 21 but without going over 21 points which is known as busting or going bust. Each player plays against the dealer, which in casinos represent the ‘House’.

The game begins with the dealer giving two cards to each player, one at a time going round the table clockwise. The dealer also gives themselves two cards, one of which is facedown and the other face up.

Each player then has several choices depending on the cards they have been dealt including to stand, hit split or double down.

To understand which option is the best you need to understand the scoring method which is:

  • Each face card (Jack, Queen, King) is worth 10 points.
  • Each numbered card except the ace is valued at that number so a 9 equals 9 points.
  • The Ace has two values, either 11 or 1 and the choice is up to the player which value they wish to assign it. The player can change the value they assign to it at any time provided it does not cause them to bust.

The first step on you have received your first two cards is to calculate the value in your hand. Your aim is to get as close to 21 without getting a score higher than 21. Your aim is also to get a higher score than the dealer has in his two cards. Once you have assessed your score you can decide from the following options:

  • Stand - this means you are happy with your score and do not need anything further from the dealer.
  • Hit - You would like another card which will add its points to the total you currently have.
  • Split - If you have two cards the same such as 2 Kings you have the option of separating them and playing them as two separate hands. This will require you to put another bet down of the same amount as your original bet to 'fund' the extra hand. You can then hit or stand on each hand independently of the other one. Some casinos allow you to multiple split if you receive a third card of the same value, in this example another king creating three or more separate hands.
  • Double Down - You can do this only on the original two cards you were dealt and not after a split. It allows you to receive only one additional card and you can double your bet amount and if you win you will receive that doubled amount as your winnings.
  • Surrendering - In most casinos this is no longer an option but originally it allowed you to give up an obviously losing hand before the dealer reveals theirs in return for only losing half of your initial wager.

Strategy

The real skill in Blackjack is assessing the strength of your hand versus the dealers. In most modern casinos, dealers have certain rules they have to follow with their hand that apply whether it is in the best interest of the dealer to do so or not.

In most casinos dealers are required to keep taking additional cards until their cards total 17 when they have to stop. Not all casinos have exactly the same rule so when checking the rules of a particular Blackjack table you need to examine the house rules for the comment "dealer hits on 16" which means if the dealer has a total score of 16 or less he must take another card. Sometime this can be higher or lower but in general this is rare.

This means there is no hard and fast rule for when its best to hit as it really depends which card the dealer is showing. There are some charts available online that give you the complete situation showing if your card equal this score and the dealers showing card is this, then you should hit or stand.

Really good players use a combination of intuition and basic math's sense to figure out which is most likely the best option. In many cases if the dealer is showing a 5 or a 6 it is usually better to stand if your cards total more than 11 points as the dealer is more than likely going to have to take another card and risk going bust.

If you cards equal 10 or 11 in total then it can often be good strategy to double down as it is impossible for you to bust in those circumstances. It does not mean your total score will exceed the dealer and is usually not a good strategy if the dealer is showing a face card.

Splitting is not normally recommended with anything less than either 2 aces or 2 face cards which would give you the potential to get Blackjack on two hands

Blackjack is the ultimate score in the game and happens when you are dealt a face card or a 10 and an ace giving you and instant score of 21. This pays 1.5 to 1 in most casinos although there has been a recent trend for casinos to alter this to paying 6 for 5. If the House is paying 6 to 5 on Blackjack the best advice is to play elsewhere.
